A gorgeous adaptation of the fairytale
Join the Philadelphia Ballet for their gorgeous season opener, The Sleeping Beauty. A classical ballet with one of Tchaikovsky's most alluring scores, prepare for a tale of adventure and romance as a dashing prince sets out to save a princess from a hellish curse.
Displaying the whole company's envious talents and using the whole scope of the stage with glorious sets and costumes, this version uses stunning choreography from Artistic Director Angel Corella, after Marius Pepita.
What is the story?
Set to Tchaikovsky's spine-tingling score, the beloved story opens with the christening of Princess Aurora. As the fairies bestow their gifts upon her, Carabosse, an evil fairy who did not receive an invite to the celebrations, enters and places a curse on the newborn babe. The curse foretells the death of the princess on her 16th birthday after pricking her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel.
Luckily, a kind-hearted fairy who had not yet blessed the young monarch softens the spell, and although the king and queen do everything in their power to destroy all spinning wheels and keep their daughter safe, she still pricks her finger but falls into a deep, thousand-year sleep instead. Only her true love's kiss could break her supernatural slumber...
